By RABBI MEIR URl GOTTESMAN
g Parshat Shoftini
A Jew has to start by judging himself and y leaving criticism ofdthers to the Ai-mighty.
Said one tzaddik: WheTTl was young, 1 wanted to change the world. When 1 becaincmiddle-aged, , Iwas satisfied to change my city. Now that I'm old. I'm satisfied it I can change myself. This week's portion deals with judges. Reb ; Shlonio Luria, the Maharshal. u-.cd to have a special person appointed his mochiach (rebuker). Before he would go in to judge a case for others, ; the mochiach would reprove the rabbi for his own faults. This way. before the Maharshal judged others, he was able to judge himself. ■
That's why the section begins: "'Shoftim v'shotrim titen I'cha. . .. Judges and policemen.
- appoint tor yourself." Why the language "for yourself?'"
Explained Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchak of Poina'a: "Before you appoint yourself judge over others, make sure to appoint yourself judge over your own ; actions. Don't have a double standard. "Your own ; indisgressions you overlook, but others' faults you pounce on and condemn.'"
In a few weeks is Rush Hashona, the Days of Awe and Judgement. When a Jew makes his own cheshbon., judges his own actions,, rights and x wrongs, then the .Al-inighty says: "He's done M> . job for me: I can pass him, on for a new, good . >car."
To be a judge is tough. Said. Rabbi .Meir Schapiro, the Lubliner Ra\: '"Right next to the law s of judges, we find the law concerning the , nii/bcach (altar). What does, one ha'.c to do with the other?
"'The altar was made up of soft earth inside, and a strong copper wall outside. .A judge must be humble and soft within his heart, but in regards to the outside, he must show determination and fearlessnes.s. He shouldn't be frightened of any litigant.""
Reb Shmuel of .Nicklcsburg used to hang his walking stick and traxeling bag on the wall of his . courtroom to remind the pov^erful litigants: "Tf you will listen to me. all is well. But don"t think 1
- fear you, I have m> cane and bag ready to.wander the world, but not to I w ist right and wrong. ■'
A new Ra\ w as appointed in the congregation of Rothschild. .As luck would ha\e it. a week after his . appointment, Rothschild himself had a din Torah \\nh another man. The new rabbi reviewed the case and saw-that Rothschild—the most powerful man in his congregation — must be judged wrong. : "I am sorry. Baron Rothschilds but you have inade : a mistake."""
Rothschild's face lit up, and he shook the rabbi's hand feirvently. "Rabbi, we knew all along 1 was wrong, But we wanted to see whether you had the courage to stand up for what's right!"
..Everv Jew is his own judge. We live in a world where no one judges-anyone. No one ever goes
■ over and says:'"You know, friend, the way you arc going is ruining you. You're working too ,hard. You are seriously transgressing Jewish lawi'"
. These weeks of Elul. we must judge ourselves. : Have we been fulfilling as many Commandments as wc can? Have we been wearing fephillen? Have
■ wc kept Shabbat properly? Have we not trans-: gressed with our niinds. our eyes.' our speech?
Our judge is each of us himself. . Tzedakah can .wash away many troubles. Please

Five Canadian women returned recently from a 2-day conference in Tel Aviv saying they were impressed by the profession-alisni of Israeli social workers in coping with the disruptions in family life caused, by the economy and wars.
The five participatcdin a workshop on prevention of family breakdown held at the Israel F'amily Coun-scning .Association, a private organisation sponsored b\ NaiionalCouncil of .lew ish 'Women of Canada. ■ ■
It was aimed at augmenting JFCA's S-year-old family life education pro.gram..
|FC.\ also operates a ihcrap\ program for mar-' ned couples and Iriiins social workers in conjunction w nil the School Of Soci.il Work in Tel .Aviv Lnisersitv. But the workshop focused on skills needed in group interaction for family life .education
Social workers atid volunteers from the Tel Aviv-based IFCA and five, graduates of Toronto's Famils A; Child Service's family life-education program participated in the 2-da\ event:
Shcila Freeman of NCJW: Estellc .Altman. teacher of the family life education program at JFA:CS; Sheila Burke, Barbra Wallers and Merle Goldman canie to Tel ,Aviv to represent the Toronto family life education group.
Freeman felt, the" trip taught her a lot about, the ■Israeli culture and its sociafproblenis.
Israeli fainily life is disrupted by the wars and other factors which. IFCA liiust deal vyith day by day, she said.
Even Sephardic and Ashke'nazic couples need counseling in ''mi.xed marriages," Freeman added.
IFCA also counsels mentally retarded couples who wish to get married, and their parents..
Israel, Freeman and three other family life educators from JF&CS ^pcnt a month in Israel, studying and touring in the country.
They paid over out of pockets, and apartment in during their stay. Twice a week they took a course in Jewish studies with Rabbi Herbert Feder, a former rabbi of Toronto's Beth Tikvah Congregation, who teaches at the Hartman Institute in Jerusalem.
IFCA's family life edu-■ cation program was developed in 197"" after its director of development, Leah Fucrst-Freilnd, rc-" turned from Canada* trained by NCJW in family life education.
.NCJW has sponsored IFCA for 12ycar-s. Funding from the Israeli government for IFCA is minimal.
Charges for clients at IFCA arc based on a sliding scale fee, but because the agency- is private, there's a lot of confidentiality regarding each client. Freeman said.

Still another teen-ager has invented the chronograph — an.instrument for measuring the 5peed of a bullet — which, is nbw^ used by the Israeli police force and is being considered for adoption by I'.S. police departments.
All three inventions were devised by computer whi/.z kids at Boys Town Jerusalem, the 33-year-old cultural-cum-voca-tional school for 1.300 needy students who are predominantly Sephardic
■Jews.
Their instruments were developed as part of the program, instituted by the Israeli government three years ago, vvhich tnakes practical commercial use of jnndvations by out-stainding Boys Town engineering students.
Jack Manishevitz, executive director of the Toronto-based Canadian Friends of Boys Town Jerusalem, points out that Canadian Friends helps in the funding of Boys Town "'and oiir scholarships have made such achievements possible."
