y Hate germs
Re your May 5 article about James Keegstra, the Eckville, Alberta; teacher who taught students for years that the Holocaust was a myth:
Both Alberta's.depart-mentpf education arid its Jewish community ought to be ashamed for allowing these germs of hate
to poison the minds of teen-agers for 14 years.
These germs of hate are just as dangerous as a deadly communicable disease. If a carrier of such a disease is known, the medical profession would isolate all such individuals and cure them..
Similarly, the same method must be" used in this case. All students who were exposed to his course, as well as the , teacher, should be required to read books that would tell them the facts of life.
They should then be required to pass an examination to demon--

fire after Israeli reconnaissance planes drew . anti-aircra:ft flak. Meanwhile, two Israeli soldiers were killed and three wounded in an ambuish in Lebanon. It is believed that Palestinians operating behind Syrian lines were responsible for the incident.
Earlier, two Israelis died in other incidents, in what is becoming a relentless war of attrition Waged by the Palestinians against the Israeli army in Lebanon.
Analysts think that Syria is encouraging the Palestinians to harass the Israelis, whose casualties have been rising. The Syrians hope the Israelis will thus pull out of Lebanon, but this is not likely to happen.
Israel says it will not withdraw from Lebanon until Syria and the PLO do... Syria, which has denounced Israel's with-> drawal agreement with Lebanon, wants an unconditional Israeli evacuation.
Nevertheless, Israel has drawn up contingency plans, for a redeployment of its army in Lebanon, in the event that Syria and the PLO stay put. Under the plan, Israel woula unilaterally take up new positions in the security zone envisaged by the May 17 withdrawal pact, and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon [UNIFIL], or the multir itational force stationed in Beirut, would ffll the vacuum.
A redeployment would probably result in a rcr duction of Israeli casualties, but in a de facto
partition of Lebanon. The Lebanese, who are caught in the middle of Israel's dispute with Syria and the PLO, are still hoping the Syrians will agree to leave.
The Lebanese are. trying to appeal to Syrian reason.....
In a rally in West Beirut, President Amin Gemayel pledged Leba^ non would always be a part of the Arab world after the withdrawal of all foreign troops. Syria fears that Lebanon, tike Egypt, will become a neutral party in the Arab-Israeli conflict.
Publicly, Lebanese officials displayed confidence that Syria would relent.
Elie Salem, the foreign minister, said: "We are fully convinced that we will have no major problem with Syria, that once this cloud passes, we and the Syrians will get together , ..."
Shafik al-Wazzan, the prime minister, prb-claim^dj: "We hope and we tend to believe that our sister Syria cannot but understand the reality (of the situation) and will therefore help us remove the IsraeU occupier from our country.'* ; The Syrians do not appear to be listening. Despite little; support froni Arab leaders for their truculent stand, Syria shows no signs of
abiding by Lebanon's wishes.
Syria, ^ ironically, is perpetuating Israel's presence in Lebanon — a
fact which is not lost on Arabs from the Atlantic Ocean, to the Persian Gulf. See Mideast Analysis, page 6.

ShaarehHaim
The May 19 Canadian Jewish News contained ~- an article about Rabbi Solomon Domb and B'nai Shalom North Congregation.
The writer states that "according to Domb, there are only two other congregations north of. Steeles off Bathurst — the Lubavitcher Centre and the Beth Avraham Congregation."
With due respect to Rabbi Domb, Congregation Shaaireh Haim of Richmond Hill is located only slightly north of the Bathurst-Steeles area of Thornhill.
Formerly known as the Richmond Hill Jewish Community Synagogue, Congregation Shaareh Haim of Richmond. Hijl was established in 1976 and officially adopted its .present name in April of 1983.
A Conservative congregation affiliated with United Synagogue of America, we have 80 member families at present; this . represents a growth of 80% over last year.
While the nucleus of our membership resides in Richmond Hill and Th or n hi 11, m^m be r families also reside in King City, Gormley and Newmarket.
Gur congregation is family oriented and one of our goals is to provide a * 'Jewish, community'' feeling to our families. In
general, our membership is fairly young, representative of the move in recent years of young Jewish families to Metro's boundaries and beyond.
Spiritual leadership is provided by Rabbi Sol Tanenzapf, who is welL known within the Jewish community. The synagogue provides complete synagogue services and is able to provide for burial requirements.
Shaareh Haim Hebrew School offers a Conservative curriculum approved by the Board of Jewish Education of Toronto. This year, 75 children attend classes from junior kindergarten through grade 5.
As president, I would be delighted to provide further information to those who might phone me at 884-3353. Linda Kaiser

Shy singles host
This is to express my thanks for the outstanding May 19 article (Wolff hosts singles).
All my friends and I thought Cynthia Gasner did an outstanding jobi informing people of the need for such singles' weekends, which was proven by the considerable number of inquiries I have had.
i was somewhat em-barassed that she wrote so much of my life's story. But, I guess, it's the human interest part that people like to read about.

heroic ghetto fighters rose up against the overwhelming German might and the ghetto was burning, the Poles stood idly by. Some were smiling, others got a treat. The Zhidky were smoldering; There were some who felt sympathy with the fighters. But help was forthcoming from_no one_ and nowhere.
In 1983, the Janizelski regime suddenly decided to arrange ceremonies marking the 40th anniversary of the ghetto uprising, the reason for which was not clear.
However, Sheldon Kirshner's May 5 interview with the Polish minister for religious affairs sheds some Ught.
The minister said that Poland would welcome an improvement in its relations with Jewish communities in the Diaspora and has a plan to restore 10 cemeteries.
AlsOi talks have begun to open a few kosher-style restaurants (of course, not glatt kosher, it would require shechita to be possible).
And Jews who wish to visit Poland will have no
problems obtaining visas (it's a source of hard currency). '
However, a lot depends on Jewish organizations abroad and on the means at the government's disposal. The government would even share in the^cost.
But, the minister didn't explain why the Jews would have to come up with the money, and forgot about the billions of dollars Poland owes the Jews for the communal and private properties it took over after World War II.
About 1,000 Jews from Belgium, France, Britain, Israel and the U.S. came to Warsaw to pay homage to the memory of those murdered in the Warsaw Ghetto. They were assured that the PLO would not be permitted to take part in the ceremonies. But, when a representative of these murderers was nevertheless allowed to lay a wreath on the grave of our martyrs, some dele: gates left Warsaw.
The minister then charged that Jewish groups in the west have
abused Poland. By which, I suppose, he meant that we don't keep quiet about the persecutions; the pogroms before and after the war; the behavior of the majority of the Poles during the German occupation; the "welcome" the Jewish survivors got when they returned from the camps,
Polish anti-semitism is still alive,

A healthy walker
I would greatly appreciate it if you would see your way to publish the following in your Letters to the Editor section.
Rachel Kanner hopes that when all her pledges are in for the recent United Jewish Appeal Walkathon, of which she walked the entire 25 km, she will be very close to the $2,000 mark.
She wishes to thank her many sponsors and hopes that we all will do it for many more healthy years to come.
