THE EDITOR
Letters are welcome if they are in English, brief [no more than 250 words], typewritten [double spaced, please], free of libel, and of interest to our reading public. We resierve the right to edit letters.
WORLD VIEW
I write to share my disappointment with your June 2 editorial entitled Own Garden.
On the one hand, we wring our hands over the loss of many of our best and brightest young Jews. On the other hand, we continue to insist on artificial distinctions between what is Jewish and not Jewish.
So long as my concern is limited to the condition of the Jews of Syria, I may work within the Jewish community. But as soon as my concern becomes the world, which the liberated Jews of Syria must be a part of, then I may no longer call this a Jewish issue and I must confine those efforts to my Canadian self.
Is it, then, any surprise that pepple choose to opt out of a Jewish identity, which is hot permitted to speak directly to issues which are of central concern to so many?
Do we not believe that our rich tradition has anything to offer a world having so much difficulty feeding its people and living in peace?
Are we too frightened to share Our soul-searching with others?
Ais a Jew, precisely because I am a Jew, I want an end to war, so that there wiU be a world for Jews to inhabit.

CANDIDHARRIS
Re your June 30 article, "Milton Harris brings distinctive style to Congress":
I'd like to express appreciation of Harris' candor on the relationship between the Diaspora and Israel.
Unfortunately, the prevailing tradition, which favors the outright ostrich policy regarding the mutual concern for our worldwide destiny can only cause harm to Israel. ^
Only a truly sincere dialogue shall assure effective support for Is-
rael and survival of our
people.

'^MISGUIDED" MARMUR?
In his May 26 review of Beyond Survival, Bernard Baskin quotes the v^iter, Dow Marmur, as claiming that "survival as the basis for Jewish action and beliefs is inadequate and often misguided."
Rabbi Marmur seems to criticize those in the Jewish community who put forth all their energies in fighting anti-semitism, maintaining undeviating support for Israel and the "surface adherence to traditional forms of Judaism.''
In the face of the unity of our enemies when it comes to hating all Jews, anti-Semitic attacks, a general weakening of support by our "allies" and an overwhelming intermarriage rate, I submit that we don't have enough Jews who give of their energy, time and money for Jewish causes.
Rabbi Marmur seems to have trouble seeing the forest for the trees. Morty Stolzman

CHEAP PAYOFF
With much dismay I read your June 16 article headlined, The Howell Transport Case.
Robert Stanley, president of the company, publicly apologized for making disparraging comments about Jewish-owned toy companies and contributed $1,000 each to six Jewish organizations. ,
I am a Canadian Jew; my embarrassment and personal shame is that the Canadian Jewish community has seen fit to accept as recompense $7,000 from such a person.
All the seven organizations, who are basically serving not only the Jewish community but the general Canadian public, could well do without the $7,000.
I feel they were bought off with money (and cheap, too!).

PEACE VS. REAL ESTATE
Riegarding. Morris Wilensky's letter (CJN, June 9), I merely wish to
NEW YORK —
A Montreal family and an Edmonton family were among the 317 passengers aboard the El Al jumbo jet fight that the Israeli airline has dubbed "Kadima Aliya."
The flight, which flew from here to Israel this week, was the largest single flight of North Americans to make aliya leaving from New York.
It also marked the 3,000th flight of new im-
migrants transported by the airline in the 18 years that the Israel Aliyah Centre of North America has been in operation. Approximately 65,000 Americans and Canadians have emigrated to Israel during that period.
The Montreal family was Samuel and Malka Wagner witti their three children and the Edmonton couple Sandy and Yael Sip with two children.
point out that I was defending the integrity of pre-Six Day War Israel, particularly the society that had been created previously through the ideals of Socialist-Zionism.
Absorbing over a million unwilling Gaza and West Bank Palestinians would eventually make the Jews a minority in their own country — a sure formula for a "secular, democratic state."
Wilensky should consider the analysis made by David Ben Gurion aft-er a lifetime of struggling for a Jewish homeland. In an interview in the New York Times Ben Gurion tried to tell us:
"Peace is more important than real estate. With proper irrigation we now have quite enough land here in the Negev to care for all the-Jews in the world — if they come. And they cer-
tainly will not all come."
The Peace Now movement, which many of us support, is certainly based on these ideals. Al Kramer

YIDDISH THEATRE
On behalf of the Yiddish Theatre of Montreal's Saidye Bronfman Centre, 1 want to thank_ you for your outstanding assistance in making our recent fund raising campaign such a success.
We would also, through the medium of your newspaper, like to express appreciation to the public who contributed so generously.
We were able, with their help, to meet our budgetary requirements for the past season.
Unfortunately, we will have to continue to look for financial support from the community throughout the coming season as well, so that the Yiddish Theatre —
the only one in Canada — may endure and continue to offer our productions to lovers of Yiddish culture of all ages.

CONTROVERSY CONTINUES
The controversy re-
garding the sinking of the Altalena (Canadian Jewish News, June 9 and 30) will probably continue for many years to come. Each side will accuse the other of responsibility in the tragic affair.
The fact remains, however, that, rightly or wrongly, the Irgun was actuated by one overpowering desire — to strengthen the ridiculously inadequate Ipaeli defence force when it sent the Altalena to the eastern Mediteri-anean.
One must not forget that five regular armies from neighboring countries fully supplied with military hardware—■ one even trained by a British general — attacked the helpless fledgling state. Military equipment from the very devil himself was absolutely essential to save Israel.
The ruling party of Israel accepted with
gratitude and all the gold it could muster a modicum of aid from behind the Iron Curtain, but for abstruse political motives, refused even to consider the freely offered military supplies from the Irgun.
After the Altalena was sunk with the loss of all its equipment and many of its crew, David Ben-Gurion, who had ordered the attack, stated: "Blessed be the bullets that killed these enemies of Israel. The cannon that destroyed the Altalena is a holy gun and should be placed in the Temple (page 625, A Child of the Century by Ben Hecht, Simon & Schuster, New York, 1954).
The same cannon is still firing at the heart of Israel in the guise of the Kahan Commission and the Peace Now movement.
