Question: Which day is family day in Jewish
I life?
Herman Wouk, in This Is My God, writes a % strong piece about the hectic days he has
i experienced when one of his works was being
II readied for Broadway. The pace is frantic. Pro-ducers are tearing
I their hair out. The H play is tottering . . . g and it's Friday after-P noon. Shabbes is J coming and he must
II go home. His associ-;i ates tear some more |j of their hair as they ^ cry out, "How can li you leave us at such a I time?" But Wouk % knows that he must If leaveorgoinsane. >| He goes home and finds his wife most i| attractive. The Sabbath table looks divine with :| its flowers, the candles in silver holders, and |i the goblet of red wine. The dear children whom |j he had almost forgotten are so delightful.
They ask all kinds of questions, as children
ii will.Tiie Bible is on the table, the encyclopedia |; joins it there, and Wouk is wonderfully ;i refreshed by the Sabbath experience. He is % healed.
% Saturday night he goes back to the wacky 1 world of Broadway. If he has a contribution to |i make, it comes out then, after the Sabbath has
I restored his sanity. Wouk closes this section of his book with the
statement made by a Gentile friend who once said to him: "I don't envy you your religion; but I envy you your Sabbath."
The Sabbath is family day fai Jewish life accordfaig to Exodus, Chapter 20:9-10. "Six •days shalt thou lalior, and do all thy worit; but the seventh day is a Sabbath unto the Lord thy God. In it thou siialt do no manner of worlt, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy % man-servant, nor thy maid-servant... .**
But, at the dedication of the Albert J. Latner ii Jewish Public Library on Sunday, Oct. 30,
II three Jewish politician^ had a different % thought. These men of highest rank, all made J the same opening gambit, stating that they J normally accepted no functions on Sunday as
I that day was reserved for the family ... for i reunion with their children.
:| But fbrthis great cause for the family.. .for
II reunions with their children.
1^ But for this cause and for this great, good i man, they just had to overlook this.
Thus, at the opening of our Jewish Public 11 Library, a library which is to bring us back to i our Jewish heritage, we were treated to that |i most un-Jewish sentiment that Sunday is |[ family day.
In Jewish tradition there is only one special i day in the week, and tiiat day is the one that 1$ stands alone.
1 As the Pesikta Rabbati, 117B states it: "The
I Sabbath has no partner. AH the other days of % the week go in pairs, but the seventh day has no Ii partner. The Sabbath said to God. 'The other |: days have partners; I have no partner.' God ;| replied,'Israel shall be thy partner.'"
i Be a partner to the Sabbath and make the § whole family be its partners. We have taken g ever so many long strides in life. The Talmud, i in Tractate Berachos, 43B tells us that "long
II strides diminish a man's eyesight by a five-II hundredth part. What is the remedy? He can 1^ restore it with the sanctificatioh wine of ?s Sabbath eve."

CALGARY-
The Canadian League of Rights, an organization that supplied Eck-ville teacher Jim Keegstra with his anti-Jewish literature, held an international convention here on Oct. 27 and 28 with over 400 delegates.
A banquet and seminar at Calgary's Marlborough Inn drew a planeload from Toronto including Paul Fronn, research director for Citizens for Foreign Aid Reform and Gil Her-banis, president of
Speak Up, a monthly anti -Communist newsletter.
The CLR disseminates right-wing books and pamphlets from its base in Fleshertori, Ont. It also publishes On Target, a weekly paper that regularly warns subscribers of "Zionist conspiracies '' and alleged infil -tratipn of Communists in high places.
On Target is 15 years old and has some distribution in Alberta as well as in other Canadian provinces.
Another CLR publication is the monthly Canadian Intelligence Service, now in its 33rd year.
One recent article was
titled The Keegstra Af-fau- and reprints of the story were found in July in a Saskatoon mall parking lot (see CJN Aug. 11).
The theme of the piece was that the horror of the Holocaust has been exaggerated by the Jewish people and that Jim Keegstra had been unfairly criticized and unfairly fired from his position as teacher in the Eckville high school.
Patrick Walsh, research director of the Canadian Intelligence Service would not say how many peqple receive On Target and his bulletin, but he said subscribers are kept In touch with
activities of the League of Rights in Australia, Britafai, South Africa and New Zealand.
Accordfaig to Walsh, lastmonth's seminar was the international convention of the Commonwealth League of Rights. The CLR holds seminars annually and the last commonwealth gathering took place in New Zealand hi 1982.
This year, speakers included Ivor Benson, a South African journalist who has written about Africa and the Middle East, and Jeremy Lee and Eric Butler, both from Australia.

JERUSALEM —
With Israel's security situation "better now than ever," the government's main concern in the near future will be to improve the country's economy, Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir told an emergency meeting of international Israel Bonds; leaders here recently.
The Israeli leader said that his government has already taken the first steps by instigating some crucial bnd«;et-cutting
measures, but warned that changes to the economic system cannot be drastic lest they result in "intolerable*' increases in unemployment levels.
He added that patience and co-operation is needed from various segments, including the Histadrut and the private sector for any future turnabout to occur.
' 'The main thing is not to get immediate solutions, but to start a new direction, "he stated.
Shamir said subsidies will be cut in the areas of health, education and

LONDON [JTA]-
A British government ban on North Sea oil supplies to Israel is to be challenged in the High Court on the grounds that it infringes the law of the European Economic Gommunity (EEC). The case is also likely to involve the European Court of Justice.
The oil had been sold in April by Sun International and Sun Oil Trading Company to a company called Bulk Oil registered at Zug, Switzerland. The sale contract contained the words "destination free but always in line with exporting country's government policy.'*
Since early 1979, tiie British government has limited oil supplies to other EEC countries, members of the International Energy Agency and to other countries with which there is an existing pattern of supply. This latter clause includes Finland but excludes Israel.
The policy was restated earlier last month following a meeting between Israeli ener|y
minister Yitzhak Modai and his British counterpart, Peter Walker.
welfare, but added this will be done in a manner so as "not to weaken the weak elements in our society."
He said allocations to settlements in the West Bank will also be reduced but said reports of government expenditures in that area have been greatly exaggerated.
"Most of the investment there in the building and development of villages and centres of populatioiT^ not coming from the government," he insisted. "They are mainly private investment;'*
The Prime Minister made his remarks during the second day of the hastily convened 2-day session, which saw 28 international Bonds leaders taking part. Representing Canada was Sol Poiatshek, general chairman of the Mont-
real Bonds organization.
The leaders met with a number of high-level cabinet members including Defence Minister Moshe Arens, Finance Minister Cohen-Orgad and Energy Minister Modai, as well as with former Finance Minister Yoram Aridor, Opposition Leader Smmon Peres and President ChaimHerzog.
According to Poiatshek, the Bonds representatives came away with the understanding that there is general support in Israel for the austerity measures being taken by the government.
"There is an awareness in Israel that tiie economy has reached a crisis stage,'* he said, ^^butlsraeUs realize they have been living beyond theh means and they have to endure a belt-tightening period."
Rights spoke on the "The Coming Worid Order — Christian or Satanic?"
Ron Gostick, publisher of the Canadian Intelligence Service and national director of the CLR was host chairman at the banquet and seminar.
Keegstra was expected to be one of the speakers, feut Walsh would not confirm if he attended or addressed the audience.
The former teacher was fired from his job in Eckville for teaching students there's a worldwide Jewish conspiracy and for questioning the number of Jews killed in the Holocaust during World Warn.
Keegstra credits the CLR with supplying him with information on his teachings. Over the years the CLR has distributed several books and pamphlets about an alleged Jewish conspiracy.
In addition to the banquet and seminar, the CLR has organized lecture tours this month and last across the country. They aire being held in schools and community centres.
Bntier, Lee, Benson and other speakers are scheduled to spend 15 days in Alberta and British Columbia and 10^ days in Ontario, accordfaig to Walsh.
Benson has already spoken in Red Deer and Edmonton and Butier is scheduled to be in Barrie, Ont. on Nov. 20. Walsh said tiiat Butier will then be in Toronto's Royal York Hotel on Nov. 25 and his address will centre on "censored history."
In Alberta, lecturers will go to some 20 communities including High River, Lethbridge and Stettler.
