Israel's war dead were remembered and its independence celebrated during a day-long program marking Yom Hazi-karon and Yom Ha'atz-maut.
The Remembrance Day commemoration began Sunday morning, May 6, at the Jewish Commuiiity Centre's northern branch, as approximately 70 people marched silently to nearby Earl Bales Park. There they were joined by those unable to participate in the march for a solemn ceremony led by Cantor Louis Danto and members of the Jewish Students' Network.
After the Israeli flag was lowered to half-mast and the ceremonial torch was lit, Israel's consul general, Gideon Saguy, called on the audience to remember all those who died in Israel's wars.
"Let's try together in the Middle East to give Shalom its meaning, so we no longer have to fight wars;" Saguy said at the outdoor ceremony, attended by more than 500.
He reminded his listeners that nothing was ever given to the Jewish people on a silver platter, recalling the War of Independence in 1948, theSuez campaign in 1956, the Six Day War in 1967, the Yom Kippur War in 1973 and the recent war in Lebanon.
"We paid a very heavy price." he said, '^en we people of Israel look back on those days, it seems like a miracle," Saguy added.
Saguy was joined by Mayor Me\ Lastmah of North York who read a scroll, in English and in Hebrew, proclaiming that Metro's Jewish community remembers all those who died in

The Jewish War Veterans of Canada participated by "hoisting the colors" in tribute to their fallen brothers in Israel.
The commemoration continued Sunday evening at a Remembrance Day service at Shaarei Shomayim Synagogue.

Halberstadt said that as Zionists "we should all be pleased to rejoice in Israiel's many accomplishments over the past 36 years" and, referring to the upcoming election in Israel, said that Israel was entering a crucial year.
De Comeille brought greetings from Prime Minister Trudeaii and the federal government and praised Israel for setting a world standard for dealing with terrorists.

The destruction of a Jewish business in North York by arson [CJN April 26] and the anti-semitic signs left behind has ^^deeply distressed'* Lewis Garnsworthy, Anglican Archbishop of Toronto.
In a letter to Rabbi Jordan Pearlson written on the same day as the incident was reported in die media, Archbishop Gamsworthy said:
