TORONTO —
The hub of any home -r be it for frenetic family or sophisticated single — is the kitchen.
Socializing, organizing daily activities and, of course, cooking and eating make this One room the most heavily trafficked by far. '
It is also the area most targeted for renovation in older dwellings where owners strive for an improved, if not idyllic, environment.

pliers exhibitfaig at the recent Toronto Home and Do It Yourself Show underlined the necessity for detailed planning when renovating a kit-chen, regardless of the complexity or sfanplicity of the project.
According to the exhibitors, the first step in either a do-it-yourself or professional project is to take stock of your lifestyle. ;
If you are a gourmet cook, with a heavy entertaining schedule, you should plan your kitchen to accommodate within easy reach the multitude of accessories, appliances, gadgets and supplies you see regularly.
Also allow for easy access to the dining area and sufficient room for guests to socialize while you prepare a meal.
If you're a family chef with children afoot, space is of even more importance. Don't skimp on equipment or work area but do try to leave enough room for a children's play or homework centre.
And, if the children are still in that sticky finger or toy flinging stage, consider a practical decor that doesn't
damage easily or require constant cleaning.
On the other hand, if your children are grown and/or you're nearing retirement, you may want the ultimate in decor and the minimum in space. Remember, though, that a kitchen for two should have gangways at least 4 feet wide.
After examining your lifestyle and deciding how much or how little yon need, draw up a preliiminaxy design plan with the main objective the elimination of unnecessary ranaroand. Use graph paper and a convenient scale to measure and sketch in counters, cupboards and appliances.
ice
proximity
Major appliances should be close to one another, each with a work top 'immediately adjoining it and the refrigerator door opening away from the work area. Kitchen utensils and other items should be Stored close to where they're used. '
At least 24'' pf counter space is needed for each kitchen task. Standard height for the average worktop is 36" from the floor, food preparation and mixing top is 32" high, and sit-down coun-,ter tops range from 26" to 30".
Floor cabinets are 24" deep and toe space should be 4" high and 3" deep.
Upper wall Cabinets generally measure about 12" deep and 12" to 32" high with the bottoms approximately 55" from
the floor* Electrical outlets are usually 44" from the floor.
When the plan is completed, try a walkthrough test of its efficiency by pretending to do routine jobs such as; unloading and storing groceries, food preparation and cooking, fiferying and cleaning.
Once the plan meets your s pec i fic at ions, launch your product research i.e. comparative shopping program for cabinets, appliances, counter tops, flooring and lighting. And if your funds are limited, don't despair — the project can be handled in stages to fit your budget.
