Compared to other nations, Israel at 36 is still in hbr boyhood vulnerable, yet strong — and subject tp "childhood diseases and traumas."
That is how Yaacov Gilead referred to the Jew-
ish state in an address to the United Jewish Appeal Young Adults Qivision at the 1985 campaign opening meeting.
The director-general of Keren Hayesod lalked about Israel' s acconiplish-ments since 1948 when the large influx of immigration tripled the population in just ten years.

He spoke of the establishment of 960 new settlements within the Green Line, with all but 140 now fully independent and self-sufficient.
Gilead went on to describe how rapidly the 6,000 Ethiopian Jews now • living in Israel have bridged a tremendous cultural gap in their eagerness to leiam the ways of their new homeland.
He spoke of turbaned immigrants who resemble ; flmx tribesmen somehow making their way to Israel from remote regions of Afghanistan.
"They too are Jews and part of the beautiful mosaic that is Israel."
Gilead praised UJA's "beautiful endeavor" as Israel's partner in Project Renewal, a program of spiritual and physical rehabilitation for the country's disadvantaged neighborhoods and the people who live in them — 600,000 all told, he said. Of that number, 400,000 are under the age of 18 — a thought that used to account for nights of lost sleep on his part, he added.
He asked the young people in the audience to try arid imagine what it would be like if Toronto's population were to suddenly double with a flow of immigrants from different social and cultural backgrounds. The effect on society could be chaotic.
said Gilead. Israel, he stated, has had to cope with that kind of growth since the Jewish hpmeland was established.
Gilead said it saddened him that many young Jews are either misinformed or lack knowledge about their own history. What they should be aware of, he stated explicitly, are the four historical events which are basic elements of our Judaic heritage. They are the destruction of the Second Temple, the Inquisition, the Holocaust, and the establishment of the State of Israel.
He dismissed the prophets of doom and , gloom by pointing out that Jews as a people are better off today — spiritually and in other ways — than at any previous time. "So many have achieved international prominence in the world of science, philosophy, the arts and commerce." .
He also told the group of his great regard for the "unique" Jewish communities of Toronto and Montreal. Gilead told them they were very fortunate to have been bom into an already well-established and organized Jewish communal structure.
"What you have is worth cherishing," he stated. "Your parents and grandparents did the groundwork and now, as they phase put, it is up to you to be the carriers of responsibility."
