BONN (JTA) -
The niayor of a West German town who suggested that "a few rich Jews should be slain" in order to balance the budget has resigned under a barrage of criticism.
Wilderich Von Mier-bach of Korschenbroicb, a town of 27,000 in North Rhine-Westphalia, said he was quitting to avoid further damage to West Germany's image abrtrad and to the process of German-Jewish reconciliation.
Von Mierbachmade the anti-semitic remark at a meeting of the town council's budget committee last December. The. local
newspaper, owned by -a mernbcr of the Christian . Democratic Union (CDU) . the mayor's part}", sup-,pained it but it came to general media attention last month and triggered outrage.
Von Mierbach ortered an apology. But the Jlewish. community in nearby Dusseldorf filed a law. suit, and calls for his i'e.signation came from non-Jewish as well as Jewish quarters.
Last week, the mayor .said he'd had enough and could no longer take the media pressure. Word from headquarters of the CDU in Bonn that he could ho longer rely oii its support apparently prompted his decision to leave office.-
material concerns
JERUSALEM (JTA) -. Eliahu Essas, the Soviet Jewish aliya activist who became an Orthodp.x Jew while still:in the USSR, spoke critically recently of the way Russian Jews have been absorbed in Israel.
Accor^ding to the 4()-year-old Essas, who headed a religious revivalist nidvement in the Soviet Union, too much stress hais been placed on material benefits and not enough on the "spiritual" needs of the immigrants. He claimed this contributed to the high dropout rate amorig Soviet biim.

He disclosed hi.s assignment. at a meeting with the two Chief Rabbis. Avraham Shapiro and Mordechai Eliahu, and thechief rabbinate council. "If coming to Israel is only about apartments, and cars and not about aliya. goiiig up to the Holy Land, then it is no wonder that the dropout rate has reached 80% or.niore." said Essas who.se.following in Russia has been likepcd to chassidic sects.'

She was referring to the : slur by Hermann Felner. a ranking member of the. Christ ian Soc ia 1 U nion (CSU) Bundestag faction, that surviving Jewish slave laborers of the Nazi era who seek reparations create the impression that * 'Jews are quick to show up when money jingles in German cash Ix'jxes."
Outrage -o\ er Felner's remark was stillmnning high when it was disclosed that Mayor Hilderich Von M ierbach of Korschen-; broich. a member of the ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU). had suggested to his town coun-cil's budget committee that "a few rich~Jews should be slain" in order to balance the budgtjt.
Annemarie Renger, vice president of the Bundeistag, said at the award ceremony that Germans, regardless of whether they are of the wartime or postwar generation, cannot shrug off responsibility for the crimes against the Jcm's. She expressed dismay at the political climate which tolerates anti-semitic statements by public officials.
Another speaker, Martin Stoehr, a Protestant clergyman, said a new-beginning in relations between Christians and Jews is irtipossible without rooting out what he called the racial ' 'poisoning" of church and theolog>. He urged a public campaign against aiiti-semitism in all walks of life.
