raises issue exit visas

By RON CSILLAG
TORONTO — Canada's ambassador to Syria, Manin Collacott, held meetings earlier this month with top officials in Damascus to discuss the plight of Syria's remaining 1,400 Jews.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Collacott met with Syria's minister of information, Mohammad Salman, and the minister of foreign affairs, Nasser Qad-dour, to raise the matter of exit visas for Jews.
After allowing Syrian Jews travel visas for over five months last year, Damascus abruptly stopped issuing the documentis last October for no stated reason.
By then, over 2,600 Jews had left, mostly to Brooklyn, N.Y. and its large Syrian Jewish emigre community.
In a May 19 letter to Judy Feld Carr, head of the Na-. tional Force for Syrian Jews, Michel de Salaberry, director of External Affair's Middle East relations division, says Canada continues ' 'to monitor the situation closely.''
The letter states Collacott conveyed Canada's "strong concern over the continued delay" in the issuing of the visas.' Collacott "emphasized that Canada wanted to see return to ftill-speed processing [of the visas] without delay.
"The position the ambassador outlined ... ve;ry much reflects the deep-felt views of the Canadian authorities on this subject."
According to Carr. the reason the Syrians have given for the delay is that Jews who left in 1992 did so without settling their debts and that new measures have to be put in place "to ensure this does not recur."
Carr discounts that explanation. She says Jews who left last year were required to leave behind all possessions, including their homes and businesses, and could take with them the equivalent of just $2,000 (U.S.) and two suitcases apiece.
But Carr is happy with the latest Canadian initiative.
"I am pleased by this kind of clear and unambigious representation made by our government," she said in a statement. "Canada has a great deal of credibility in the region and its commitment to the freedom of Syrian Jews '.. is of great importance.
"Syria, as a signatory to the United Nations Declaration of Hirniah Rights, which enshrines the right to freedom of travel, must be made accountable for its breaches.'
There is a story in almost every Jewish surname and Toronto lawyer FRED M. CATZMAN has been researching their migins over the past few years. Mr Catzman reports on his research in The CJN.
AGASSEE - EGOZI
Suzanne Agassee enquires about the origin of the surname of her late father-in-law.
The source is pure Hebrew. Agas is the Hebrew word for "pear" which is reflected in the German word for pear tree Bimbaum.
The name Agassee is often confused with Egozi which has a similar origin. It derives from Egoz — Hebrew for nut. The German equivalent is Nussbaum — nut tree.
