Israeli officials have described as one-sided and unfair a new Amnesty International report on excessive •use of force by the army in the territories.
The 16-page report, released to the press in London recently, alleges that eight Palestinians have died from beatings and that thousands have been victims of "indiscriminate" army violence since last December.
It adds that ho information has been made available about investigations into the cases of the 'eight deceased, and that there are "serious doubts" regarding the military authprities' preparedness to punish soldiers fo^d to have used excessive force.
"While preparing the report, no one in Amnesty contacted any of the Israeli authorities, and all the information was compiled from one-sided sources," said a foreign ministry spokesman.
Onee-the-report reaches the authorities, the spokesr '\ man said, it will be checked by military and legal ; authorities, and a detailed reply will be provided to Amnesty by the attorney-general.
Another official accused Amnesty of trying to "embarrass us by releasing the information before we see, it. . . causing tremendous damage to our public relations.''
Amnesty "spokesman Shaun Styles claimed the organization had been in contact with the Israeli authorities ' 'on several occasions" in the past nine months.
"This report is hardly a bolt from the blue," said Styles. "These alleged human rights violations are no secret, and iiivestiga-tion is long overdue.
Deportations, arrests and curfew appear to be thb policy chosen by Defence Minister Yitzhak Rabinto break the backbone of the 8-month-old uprising in the territories, at least until after the Knesset eleetionsin November.
A. first'step in the tough-enedi "negative" policy -^surfaced last week, with the
unprecedented decision to expel 25 Palestinian activists. Other moves can be expected soon, including the outlawing of the "popular committees ".which are believed to be at the heart of the urprising, and the massive arrest, and administrative detention, of members of: those committees.

jured were tourists from France, whose names were not immediately available.
The Rehov Nordau pedestrian mall was packed with post-Sabbath strollers •
The explosive charge, which police said was an Israel Defence Force
hand~ grenade, was apparently thrown between a crowded cafe and a toy shop next door.
The injured children were gazing through the shop-window as their parents and friends sat in the cafe.
Eyewitnesses gave police descriptions of
three Arab youths seen running, away from the scene after apparently placing something on the ground.
Three youths answering the descriptions were among dozens of Arabs rounded up within minutes. Police minister Haim Bar-Lev said they
were residents of the West Bank town of Jenin.
There have been several instances of arson in thF" popular pedestrian mall since it opened just over a year ago. But police ascribed the incidents to "criminal elements" involved in commercial disputes.
