Sorrie of them hadn't seen each other for 37 years. They came from Hamilton, Ont:, Montreal, New Jersey, Ottawa, Toronto and London, England for a weekend reunion at Camp Kinneret, at Mont Tremblant, Que.
At the June wedding of a fellow Judaean's daughter in Ottawa, a group of former Canadian Young Judaeans, delighted to rediscover one another, simultaneously declared: ■'Wouldn't it be nice to have a reunion!"
May Linnebahk, Sylvia Horwich and Edna Gluck got to work and Camp Kinneret was secured for the weekend of Aug. 19, immediately after camp closed.: With just over six weeks time, the taisk of Icfcating and contacting Judaeaiis of the early 1950s who had attended Camp Hagshama, Biliiim and the Machon, >vas daunting.
At such short notice, prior commitmehts did not allow everyone to be present. However, armed with memories, photpgraphs •and cameras, those able to came with wives, husbands and children. They came out of curiosity, but moreover, the desire to relive a common experience . at a pivotal time in their lives.
Canadian Young Judaea in the early 1950s was a burgeoning and dynamic national youth movement. Camp Hagshama, originally in Perth, Ont., before it moved to Mont Tremblant and became Camp Kinneret, was thriving. The first leadership training camp, called Biluim, was housed in tents on top of the hill and 35 16- and 17-year-olds from, across , Canada attended. That September, the first Canadian Young Judaea group was sent to the Machon the^ Jewish Institute for Youth Leaders fromi Abroad in Jerusalem. " ; '

Among those who participated in Young Judaean reunion at Camp Kinneret were (from left) Helen Levy Gilboa, Nepean, Ont.; Edna Edelberg Gluck, Montreal; Mary Polsky Linnebank, St. Sophie, Que.; Hen-ny Lowy Caswell, London, England; Hindalea Goldstein Wiseman, Toronto; Norma Miller, Montreal; and Judy Miller Pearlman,. Montreal.
some were instantly recognizable, others had to announce their names before being engulfed by shouts of glee and disbelief. The suggested program of activities was superseded by the all-consuming need to communicate and a weekend of non-stop talking, broken only by bouts of feasting ensued.,
It was interesting to note that most of them have pursued careers in public service, including educational psychology,, fund raising, medicine, nursing, public relations and teaching;
Herbert Horwich, associate professor of sckmoI-ogy at Concordia University, opened the discussions.
What emerged was the unanimous confirmation of the crucial role that Canadian Young Judaean camps played in the lives of each and everyone particularly those from small towns without a sizeable Jewish community. "All of a sudden, you belonged,'' said Hindalea Wiseman, formerly Gold-stiein, of Kitchener, Ont. ''Regardless of and social background
it was the spirit of being involved . . . I lived my life as a teenager, for summer camp."
Judy Miller Perlman, development director of the Saidye Bronfman Centre in Montreal said,''As well as the development of skills and future pptentiail, the camp did something else — it planted a seed into every heart, a seed called love of Israel."
It became clear that this core reunion' was only the beginning. Before international agricultural consultant, Menachem Roytenberg (whose daughter's wedding acted as the catalyst for this event) was allowed to catch his plane for Zaire, he was roped into the organizing committee for a full-scale reun-
ion to take place in August, 1989.
As gratifying as the reunion itself, was the support of schlichim and camp directors Amos and Noga Oz. With banners of welcome and a gigantic reunion cake, the staffs of Camp Kinneret and Biluim had volunteered to stay behind after a successful summer that saw 100 16-year-olds at Camp
Biluim alone. They had wanted to meet and greet their counterparts of years gone by, ensuring the unbrpken chain of the spirit of Canadian Young Judaea.
