IORONTO - •
Over hors d"oeuvres and pastries. fomierGounscllors and Canifx^rs of Caj-np Mas-sad in the Quebec Lauren-tides had the oppi^rtiinity tO: reminisce at the cairip's first-ever alumni reunion since its inception more than 40 years ago.
The reunion \Vas held recently ai the Lipa Green Building with more than ' 100 fornier Massadniks present, many of whom had not seen each other for a quarter of a ceiilury.
"The mood was ecstatic and reminiscent \*ith many tears flowing. It was iruly a fantastic evening," said lawjer Issie Fishman, 38, immediately following the event.
'' At first- we were scared that people wouldn't recog-
nize each other, so we. donned the necessary name tags." he said. "Yet. when we saw the /aces, there was ■ instant recognition.".
Among those present were Chaviva Hosek, Ontario's.housing minister as well as former "vatikim" ■from across Southern Ontario. Quebec, and even one alumnus. Dr. Sidney Katz, who came especially from Vancouver for the event.
The idea for the reunion came from Camp Massad alumni Chaviya Hosek, prominent Toronto lawyer Norrtian May and Dr. Yehuda Lipsitz, executive director of Canadian Jewish Congress, Ontario Region, who was director of Camp Massad from 1964 to 1972.
Many former campers and staff of the camp, situated on Lac Carre
near St. Agathe, Que., now live in Ontario, said Lipsitz. The camp was founded after World War II and stressed Jewish culture, tradition, and Hebrew language. It is affiliated with the Keren Halarbut movement.
. Norman May provided the opening remarks, followed by Dr; Sidney Blan-shay, Camp Massad director for the Quebec region.
Alumni Debra Ekiove, a Jewish cultural leader, David Kaufman, a producer for CBC'sThe Journal, arid Elan Dresher. a linguistics professor at University of Toronto, presented a medley of camp songs.
Micha Givon, former drama and music counsellor in the late 60s, prepared a humorous poem in Hebrew filled with numgr-
-pus camp anecdotes: it had ~ the audience rearing.
Lipsitz entertained the group with a slide presentation taken during his 8-year tenure as camp director, some 20 years ago; One of the first camp movies dating back to the mid-1950s was also shown.
"Many adults who attended saw themselves portrayed in the slides or the movie as campers or counsellors. It was truly funny to see how we looked then," Fishman noted.
Fishman,; who attended Camp Massad from the age of 11 and eventually became a counsellor there ha.s maintained a close tie to the camp since then.
"L always looked forward to each c-amp season with great anticipation. It gave me the opportunity to renew -old acquaintances
and make new one.s." he said. "It also gave ine a sen.se of independence and encouraged me. to speak Hebrew."
Although the exterior" setting of the camp is still the same, says Fishman, there have been some im-
provements including the addition of new bunks and a new auditorium. The spectacular lakefront site has always been one of the cam p's best as.sets, he feels.
; Over the years the number of campers has fluctu-
ated from a high of 400 to a low of 100. Fishman reported.
"But it has never lacked spirit.'' said Fishman, who is so buoyed by this year's successful reunion that his committee is already planning ahead for next year's.
