Canadian Appeal to Syria
UNITED NATIONS — Canada's ambiassador to the United Nations, Louise Frechette, as part of a statement on global human rights abuses, last week said Canada hopes Syria will honor recent 'Maudable" plans to eliminate barriers to travel abroad by Syrian Jews. Syrian president Hafez Assad announcdl last week that the country's remaining 1,200 Jews would be allowed to U^v-el by month's end. B'nai Brith Canada sent Frechette a letter of thanks for her remarks.
Letter Bomb to Pro-Jewish Mayor
VIENNA — The pro-Jewish mayor of Vienna, _Helmut Zilk, was seriously injured last week when a letter bomb exploded as he was opening his mail. Israeli leaders Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres sent get-well wishes to Zilk, as did former Jerusalem Mayor teddy Kollek, a Vienna native. Last month, Zilk and Kollek hosted the opening here of a Jewish museum, a project Zilk promised in 1986 amid reports on then presidential candidate Kurt Wald-heim's Nazi past. Bombings aimed at advocates of minority groups have raised concern in Austria about the rise of anti-immigrant sentiment. At least 10 letter bombs have been sent, and authorities believe neo-Nazis are behind the attacks.
Romanian Jews Concerned
BUCHAREST — A memorial to a Romanian Nazi collaborator has been erected near Bucharest to the dismay of Jewish groups. At Ibast one statue of wartime despot Ion Antonescu has been seen near the capital in recent weeks. During Antonescu's dictatorial rule, from .1940 to 1944, moi-e than 250.000 Jews died in territories controlled by Romania. Several streets and squares throughout Romania have been dedicatedto Antonescu in recent years, sparking fears among the approximately 17,000 jews in the country that anti-Semitism is on the rise.
Italian Jews Relieved
ROME — The Jewish community here is relieved as candidates supported by Italy's former Communist Party routed the neo-fascists in most municipal elections throughout the country; Tullia Zevi, president of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities, called the defeat of the neo-fascists "significant for all Europe." The runoff elections for the mayors of 129 cities and towns marked the first time since World War II that the Italian Jewish community came out formally on behalf of piarticular candidates. Jewish groups held rallies and appealed to voters to reject neo-fascist candidates.
Ties With Laos
UNITED NATIONS — Laos has become the latest country to est^lish diplomatic ties with Israel. In a ceremony here last week, the Laotian ambassador to the United Nations, Alounkeo Kittikhoun, signed an agreement with his Israeli counter{»rt. Gad Yaacobi. The foreign minister of Laos plans to visit Israel early next year, and a delegation from Israel's Foreign Ministry will travel to Laos to investigate joint cooperation. Circus School for Israel?
TEL AViV There may be a circus school in Israel soon, following last week's show here by the Russian State Circus. Impresario Victor Kagan confirmed that preliminary agreements for the establishment of an Academy for Circus Arts have been concluded with Goscirque, the Russian government public company. Circus director Andrei Yufin said he and some ofhis colleagues would be willing to teach at the proposed academy. "1 will stay here to work, not to live. My home is in Moscow." he said. Rishon Leziori, Tel Aviv, and Hod Hasharon have been raised as possible sites for the academy,

U.S. Leaders Investigate MiAs
JERUSALEM — The U. S. Congressional mission that will investigate the fate of the six missing Israeli soldiers will leave for Damascus within the next few weeks, Secretary of State Warren Christopher told the families of four of the MiAs at a meeting in Jerusalem last week. Christopher met with the parents of Yehuda Katz, Zvi Feldman and Zecharia Baumel, missing since 1982, and separately with Tami Arad, wife of navigator Ron Arad, the IDF navigator shot down over Lebanon six years ago. He did not meet with the families of RahamimAlsheikh and Yossi Fink, whom Arab sources have said are dead;
U.S. Opposition Grows
WASHINGTON - Jewish opponents of the Middle East peace processv both Israeli and American, appear to be increasingly voicing their concerns to U.S. officials. Last week, a small delegation of activists on the right wing of the Aiherican Jewish political spectrum met at the State Department with Thomas Miller, head of the Israel desk. Last month, former members of the Yitzhak Shamir government met with officials in the capital. Herbert Zweiboh, one of seven Jewish leaders who met with Miller, said the delegation's goal was to tell die U.S. government that not all American Jews back the peace process.
Another Company Pays Fine
WASHINGTON — Another American company, F.E. Myers Co., an Ohio manufacturer of industrial hoses, has agreed to pay a fine for allegedly violating U.S. anti-boycott laws. The U.S. Commerce Department announced last week that it was imposihg a $65,000 civil penalty on the company, for 10 alleged violations oJF. the Export Administration Act relating to the Arab economic boycott of Israel. F.E. Myers allegedly refused to do business with a supplier after learning the supplier was blacklisted. In addition, the firm allegedly provided prohibited information about other peoples' business dealings relating to,.the boycott. F.E. Myers agreed to pay the penalty, but neither admitted nor denied having violated the law.
Rightist Movements Said on Rise
NEW YORK — Extremist right-^wing movements Worid-wide have gone oh the offensive in recent months, significantly increasing their attacks on Jews, says the second in a series of reports of the Tel Aviv University Project for the Study of Anti-Semitism, held in cooperation with th^ Anti-Defamation League. Dr. Dina Porat, project director at Tel Aviv University, expressed cpnceni at the rise of anti-Semitic violence and vandalism, including damage to Jewish sites, particularly cemeteries, and noted the growing connection between Holocaust denial and anti-Jewish vandalism.
Belarus Marks Ghetto Liquidation
MINSK — For the first time, the govenmient of Belarus has recognized Jewish victims of Nazism. A recent series of official events marked the 50th anniversary of the liquidation of the Minsk ghetto, in which 100,000 Jews perished. Rabbi Arthur Schneier, president of the New York-based Appeal of Conscience Foundation, look part in the ceremonies at the personal invitation of foreign minister Pyotr Kravchanka.
Rabin Thanks Bulgarians
JERUSALEM - Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin last week thanked the Bulgariaii people for.saving 50.000 Jews during the Holocaust. "We, the members of the Jewish people, remember and will forever remember the handful who came to our aid." Rabin said in the Knesset in the presence of Bulgaria'.s president. Zhelyu Zhelev. and his wife. Mariyka. During Zhelev's three-day visit.
