It is undeniable that any food column will reflect the uste and cravings of the atrritor. It is certainly true in this column. I have often said that some of the foods presented here are those related to my childhood iri Bengal (India). Lik^ most people/ I have a special craving at timestor certain foods Being a Bengali I have a tremendous yearning for fish, especially the fish known in North America as shad. Even though this is a very ooTiy fish, it has a special appeal because of its flavour. Shad resembles white fish, except that it is a little wider-and softer. The scalcuujf fresh shad is really shiny. Most Europeans and Westerners love caviare (the roes of beluga, sterlet; keta, or dog-salmon), but if they try shad roe just once, they will come back for more. The distinctive taste of shad roe is retained when the roe is gently fried in ghee and served with freshly chopped coriandeT leaves, green chili and fresh squeezed lemon juice. There are many ways we can cook shad* but because it is a bony fish, it is more desirable to serve shad roe. Fried shad roe cooked in a pfenty of green (unripe ) tamarind liquid was our favorite food during summeir days. j|

New Delhi, (UNI) - President <^f the Indian National Science Academy Prof. M.G. K. Menon has said the study of total solar eclipse of 1980 had yielded important results. '
Prof, Menon, who was inaugurating a three-day international symposium on the total solar eclipse, sard the observations conducted during the period of the eclipse in India not only covered narrow fields * like optical astronomy but were also extended to areas like solar radiation radio astronomy, ionospheric physics, atmospheric physics and the effect of eclipse on the behaviour Df animals, birds
arid insects. '
Prof; Menon said the solar eclipse also provided a great opportunity for cooperative work between a large number of scientists from various parts of the world in India. He said the occasion was memorable because a large number of Indian scientists could take part in it.
Prof. Menon said it was a pity thai the cpmm6n people of the country were frightened away from witnessing one of nature's most spectacular sights because of superstitions. The high pressure' publicity pn the eve of the total solar-eclipse that people who looked at the sun during the eclipse would lose their eye - sight or that they should avoid taking food because of possible poisoning, had affected even those who were not usually superstitious. 1 [
Prof, Menon said the lesson of this type of propaganda should be learnt. Scientific, issues should be propagated in a scientific manner, he said.
